Family Tree is such a special book to me. The last couple of years has really highlighted the importance and value of community and family, no matter what that family looks like.
When I look at my children, in my mind, I see a map with lines drawn from Vietnam, Britain, America and Denmark, all leading to our home in Australia. Diversity and access to different stories, different experiences and backgrounds, is what makes for a robust and accepting family. I imagine my kids exploring the world, and sharing their own stories, whilst always knowing their roots are strong back home.
Ronojoy brought such a beautiful aesthetic to this project. I love that the landscape is unmistakably Australian, but that in his characters he highlights our diverse culture, as well as a gentle depiction of the diaspora of people and seeds, spreading our stories far and wide.
‘Reading about science—in this case, astronomy—and asking the big questions can have the same effect on young minds (without the risk of blasting yourself through the stratosphere in a giant aluminium loo roll tube). An understanding of the sciences offers a cognitive and spiritual shift in perspective, giving kids a more complete view of their place in the universe. Life is beautiful, and we are all very, very, lucky to be here’.
